Sometimes you gotta know when to pack it in.
I stayed up long enough last night to see Ohlendorf give up the lead and I decided at that point that it was just not a game the Yankees were going to win. While they did make a comeback, the ominous sign to me was the rain lasting just long enough to end Phil Hughes’ day, after he pitched a decent two innings. It’s hard to win a game like that when you only get 2 innings from your starter. What’s most disappointing is that this could have been Hughes’ first win of the year, something he needs for confidence if nothing else.
Girardi made the right move though. Not only is Hughes a young pitcher, but he’s also on an innings limit and will have to have some short starts. Might as well make one of those short starts one where pitching further could compromise his arm.
Let’s hope he builds off those two innings and does well next time.
