Phil Hughes is on the shelf until July with a broken rib. Obviously having a young pitcher go down with an injury is never a good thing, however there are some positives here:
- Hughes has an innings limit this season, so therefore he likely couldn’t start all year anyways.
- In case you haven’t noticed, Hughes has been terrible lately. There was talk of taking him out of the rotation, so in terms of winning right now, this injury may actually improve the Yankees.
- Darrell Rasner has been great in Triple-A and deserves a shot.
- The broken rib gives a tangible reason as to why Hughes’ mechanics have been off, rather than just assuming it’s because he’s only 21. Hopefully, this helps his confidence once he comes back.
