So what did we learn from the Yankees 9-2 drubbing of the ChiSox last night?
* As I wrote yesterday, the Yankees should probably retain a few of their free agents and not to be too reactionary but Mussina and Abreu look like the best candidates.
* The Yankees are a much better team right now than Chicago. It’s just that simple. I know the Yankees’ success depends on the playoffs, but even with their injuries they’re one of the 5 best teams in the AL. But when you play in the AL East, that might mean 4th place. What can you do. Just remember, given the nature of baseball, if you keep throwing a top 5 team out there, you’re going to win more than you lose.
* Humberto Sanchez is still a major Yankee prospect. This has nothing to do with his one inning last night (though he did look pretty good). Keep in mind: Sanchez was mentioned along with Hughes and Chamberlain at one point but he fell off everyone’s radar once he had surgery. Yet even when the Yankees traded for him, they knew he would probably need the procedure. His development is still on track.
