The Sports Guy has an insanely in-depth article on ESPN today about Manny leaving Boston (whether or not it’s the end result of the “book” he’s been working on, I have no idea). Read it only if you have a solid 20 minutes (perhaps longer).
His prediction for Manny?
So, how will this play out? I see Manny leading the Dodgers to the 2008 World Series, breaking their hearts and donning pinstripes next season.
Hank Steinbrenner reminds me of George in the early ’80s — brash, irrational, eager to stick it to the Red Sox — and if 1983 George were running the 2008 Yankees, you know he’d overpay for Manny even if the
Yanks have to move Johnny Damon to first base and even though it makes no real sense at all. They will sign him. I know it. They will get Manny and Sabathia. For a combined cost of $300 million.
Eh, I would be very, very, VERY surprised if this happened. Look, Cashman will never turn down a no-brainer – and if Manny is willing to come to NY on a 1 year deal with an option just to stick it to his old team, that’s a no-brainer. However, if the Yankees do pony up $100 million for 4 year for Manny, it would indeed be a Hank move… but of course Hank isn’t calling the shots, Cashman is. If that deal goes down without Cashman’s approval, I honestly think he might quit.
Personally, I think Manny stays with the Dodgers, but who knows. I’m just very confident he won’t be a Yankee.
